Luke 9:33-37; Mark 9:22-24, 28-29

TEXT:  Luke 9:33-37; Mark 9:22-24, 28-29

MAIN THING:  Through the story of the Transfiguration of Christ, we find some lessons to apply to our lives. First, Jesus teaches us through His example that God will be with us on our journey to Heaven, but we will face trials, suffering, and sacrifice before we meet Him in the air.  Second, Jesus shows us the importance of prayer through taking His disciples on the mountain to pray and then being transfigured as He is praying.  Lastly, Jesus demonstrates the appropriate response to being transformed by the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives: go back into the community and be about the Father’s business.

INTRO: Today we continue to examine the Mount of Transfiguration and the implications for our lives.  Last week we discussed the Importance of the Presence and Prayer in our lives.  Spending time with the Father in prayer is how we experience the presence of God in our lives, but prayer goes past that and changes us from the inside out.  When we are changed, then we can in turn help change our community, nation, and world.  What should be our response to experiencing the mountain moments with God?

OUTLINE:

  1. The Importance of Movement
    1. Mountain Moments are not meant to be permanent dwelling places.
    2. Mountain moments are designed by God to prepare you for what lies ahead.
    3. Every triumph requires movement and action of some kind that is grounded in faith, propelled by prayer, and moved forward by obedience.
    4. The experiences on the mountaintops are preparation for the mission to come.
  2. The Importance of Mission
    1. The mission for all Christians is to be about the Father’s Business.
    2. Jesus was always focused on the will of the Father.
    3. Our ultimate mission, the true Business of the Father, is people. We are to make disciples and teach them to obey God.
    4. To truly fulfill our mission, we must surrender to the will of the Father and be filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).
